Prepare For Your Visit

Common Questions

I am a new patient. What can I expect?

Before your appointment, our offices will call you to confirm your appointment date and time and the location of our office. We can answer any initial questions you may have.

What is a Gynecologic Oncologist?

A gynecologic oncologist is a doctor that specializes in treating cancers specific to women, such as uterine, ovarian, breast, cervix, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. Their specialization ensures the best possible outcome for your treatment.

What is the preparation and recovery from surgery?

Preparation and recovery depend on cancer location and surgery type (minimally invasive vs. open). The following standard preparation applies to all.
  1. Medical screening, including blood tests, EKG, and imaging (CT/MRI) to map the cancer
  2. Bowel prep for abdominal surgeries (ovarian or uterine) includes a clear liquid diet and a laxative the day before to empty the bowels
  3. Medications will be adjusted 7 – 10 days prior, primarily eliminating blood thinners like aspirin and ibuprofen
  4. Skin prep includes a special antibacterial wash the night before and morning of the surgery
  5. Fasting: patients must fast from food or drink after midnight (except specific medications)

Recovery Reference Guide

Recovery is highly individualized for each surgical option and procedure. Below is a generic breakdown of common pathways based on clinical baselines.

Condition Common Surgery Hospital Stay Typical Recovery
Ovarian Cancer Debulking: Surgical extraction of uterus, ovaries, tissues, and visible lesions. 3 – 7 Days 6 – 12 weeks. Deep visceral wound healing support; no substantial heavy loading for at least 3 months.
Uterine Cancer Hysterectomy: Surgical removal of the uterus/cervix channels. Typically robotic or laparoscopic. 0 – 2 Days 4 – 6 weeks. Minimally invasive measures support faster recovery, standing action, and light desk cycles.
Cervical Cancer Radical Hysterectomy or Trachelectomy: Specialized tissue excision. 1 – 3 Days 6 weeks. May utilize short-duration post-op drainage controls to monitor nervous and bladder systems.
Vulvar Cancer Vulvectomy: Sector surgical excision or complete lymph-node removals. 1 – 5 Days 6 – 8 weeks. Requires diligent, specialized cleaning pathways, soft drying actions, and focused comfort care.
Vaginal Cancer Vaginectomy: Partial extraction with corresponding recovery reconstructions. 2 – 5 Days 6 – 8 weeks. Focused infection prevention criteria; specialized support pathways.
GTD (Molar) D&C with Suction: Specialized medical curettage of cell lines. Same Day 1 – 2 weeks. Physically minimal strain; requires long-term blood marker checks over consecutive months.

*Recovery values are statistical averages. Specific experiences will depend heavily on individual pathology parameters and personal history.
